Frequently Asked Questions

How does CHIROPRACTIC work?

Very simply, a chiropractic adjustment helps restore normal function to the spine and nervous system. Many symptoms, including pain, numbness, tingling, and muscle weakness are often the result of restricted spinal bones that cause nerve irritation (pinched nerve). The chiropractic adjustment restores normal joint motion and position, releasing pressure from delicate nerve tissue. Prescribed postural and rehabilitative exercises help to increase flexibility and increase strength of supportive muscles to ensure that the problem does not return.

How is chiropractic different from massage?

Chiropractors have years of extensive training that allows them to examine and diagnose conditions – they are doctors. In addition to working with the muscles, chiropractors return normal function to the joints using manipulation. Without normal joint function, muscle spasm and tension returns.

What do I wear for my first visit?

We recommend loose and comfortable clothing. A changing area is available if necessary.

What’s the main difference between wellness care and standard medical care?

Wellness care seeks to enable the natural healing ability, not by adding something to the system, but by removing anything that might interfere with normal function, trusting that the body would know what to do if nothing were interfering with it. Standard medical care, on the other hand, seeks to treat a symptom by adding something from the outside – a medication or by removing something- a surgery or other medical procedure.

What is the Wellness Approach?

Wellness is a state of optimal conditions for normal function… and then some. The wellness approach is to look for underlying causes of any disturbance or disruption (which may or may not be causing symptoms at the time) and make whatever interventions and lifestyle adjustments would optimize the conditions for normal function. This approach encourages natural healing, and minimizes the need for invasive treatment, which should be administered only when absolutely necessary. When the body is working properly, it tends to heal effectively, no matter what the condition. When the body heals well and maintains itself well, then there is another level of health that goes beyond “asymptomatic” or “pain-free” which reveals an open-ended opportunity for vitality, vibrant health, and an enhanced experience of life. This is true for mental and emotional health as well as physical health.

Once you go to a chiropractor, do you have to keep going?

The duration of your treatment is always up to you. Many of our patients choose to continue with periodic care to support ongoing healing efforts and detect any possible new problems that may occur in a proactive manner before they become more serious. Chiropractic neurological care allows your brain and body to function at the highest level possible. Therefore, many people seek regular chiropractic care as part of their health care regime.

What is the “popping” or “cracking” sound during the adjustment?

Chiropractors adjust the vertebrae (bones in your back) and when that happens occasionally you will hear a “cracking” noise. Gases that shift in between the joints when they are adjusted cause this noise. The same thing occurs when people "pop" their knuckles. There is no significance to the sound.

Does it hurt to get adjusted?

Before your adjustment, muscle massage and other muscle relaxing techniques are applied to lessen the amount of pressure applied in your adjustment. The patient is talked through every step of the adjustment. You can relax because there are no surprises. Most patients report that their adjustments are quite comfortable…in fact, they say it “feels good”!

Can children and seniors get adjusted?

Everyone has a nervous system, therefore everyone can get adjusted. Chiropractors are nervous system specialists. We make sure the nervous system is free of interference so your body can function as close to 100% as possible. Children and seniors require different non-force techniques however, care for children and senior adults can be very effective in improving their overall health and quality of life.
